Application formLeadership is an attitude.
Leadership is an attitude.
From hero myth to sustainable and effective leadership reality
The “Leipzig Masterclass” 2023
Cooperation Trias Zurich (Gerhard Fatzer) & AESOP Leipzig (Anne Fanenbruck)
The genesis:
The impulse to offer a masterclass for coaching, leadership, organizational development and culture in Leipzig came when we were sitting in the dining car on the train between Vienna and Leipzig and discussing culture and humble leadership. The starting point for our discussion is our conviction that leadership is an attitude and not a theoretical – sometimes academically abstract – definition. Of course, we are aware that we are not initially bringing anything new into the world, and yet we know that it is time for a necessary and contemporary positioning. A positioning on the part of consultants, coaches, trainers and managers.
The more intensively we have dealt with leadership and coaching in the course of our professional activities, the clearer the picture of the attitude has become. Thinking about leadership means thinking about people with responsibility and decision-making authority.
Responsibility for themselves, their employees and the organization for which and in which they make decisions.
Whether we describe the phenomena surrounding us as the VUCA world, new work, agile or mega trends is ultimately down to the fit for the explanatory model for phenomena. Phenomena that have always existed and will continue to exist at different speeds, densities and development cycles. The fact that we can fit everything into descriptive models and constructs today is thanks to evolution. This includes organizational evolution.
And leading and shaping relationships can be seen as an evolutionarily stable strategy. Thanks to the research and findings of Ed Schein, we know about the importance of relationships in successful organizations – and therefore also in sustainable organizations.
Schein describes this as professional closeness – not distance. As a manager, recognizing that I am dependent on my employees in order to be successful and effective is an insight that is not revealed in the theoretical discussion of leadership, but can only be experienced in concrete action.
The decisive factor for the actions of managers is their attitude.
What is crucial is to understand the real world of managers and to react to the challenging situations in everyday life.
Leadership today is therefore much more than a theoretical discussion, it is the practicing of an attitude, namely “impartiality”. Today, leadership means responsibility and decision-making in a fast-paced everyday life. Leadership is about relationships and shaping relationships.
The second important component is cultural development. Culture is the most important element of any change process, be it organizational development or digital transformation.
The MASTERCLASS Leipzig offers managers the framework to focus on their own organization and to align, reflect, test and deepen their leadership actions and attitude accordingly. The focus is on your own change project and is practiced on a case-by-case basis using important elements of a change architecture. The master class is offered to experienced managers who want to develop themselves and their organization.
The seminar will kick off with Ed Schein’s son, Peter Schein. He will seamlessly continue this life’s work (“Humble Leadership and Culture”). This will focus on specific case studies, practicing this attitude, the most important core competencies of managers and the “Spirit of Humble Inquiry”.

This Master’s program is the result of many years of cooperation between the Trias Institute, Edgar H. Schein/Peter Schein, the M.I.T. Sloan School and the networks of Otto Scharmer (M.I.T., Presencing Institute) and Peter Senge (M.I.T. and SOL), (seminars at SOL or PI, Boston).
The co-leadership is guaranteed by Anne Fanenbruck, Mouna Läderach, Dr. Sabina Schöfer (Hochschule Bremen) and Dr. Sylvia Böcker.
Cooperation partners and scient. Advisory board: Prof. Kornelia Rappe Giesecke (ex EFH Han-nover) and Prof. Michael Giesecke (ex University of Hanover).
As Senior Lecturers: Peter Senge with his OLCenter for Learning Organization, today SOL (Society of Organizational Learning) and Otto Scharmer with his Presencing Institute. The guest seminars with these cooperation partners are booked directly with SOL or PI and paid for separately.
These three networks represent the “state of the art” of organizational development.
Participants learn the latest knowledge/know-how and tools for sustainable organizational development, corporate culture, dialogue, system knowledge and tools, leadership (“unprejudiced leadership”), the art of asking questions, far removed from trends and hypes. You receive the “state of the art”.
This Master’s course is aimed at experienced managers and consultants who have a concern or a change project for their future work and personal life. A foundation in “Coaching and OE” is a prerequisite, be it a diploma or a Master’s degree.
The Trias Institute and Network has 30 years of experience in training executives and consultants in a global context, publishing important book series, an international journal and many conferences on these topics.
Such a masterclass will train in the art of sustainable organizational and cultural development and also address this in the form of personal questions such as: What have I experienced professionally so far, what is my learning story? How do I want to, can I work? How do I live? What do I want to change and how? How do I want to lead?
Experienced people who bear responsibility in and for organizations often ask themselves these and other questions. A personal OE or change project as an integral part of the course demonstrates this concern.
The philosophy and attitude of this master class is a basic attitude of decisiveness and impartiality, as formulated by Ed Schein/Peter Schein as the basis of “Humble Consulting”. It is the “Spirit of Inquiry”. Peter Schein, our long-time friend and thought leader, will accompany the course via video conferencing. Film examples of our late mentor Ed Schein will complement this in a targeted manner.
Otto Scharmer and Peter Senge are booked separately by the participants as required. We take a critical look at current discussions and developments in management and ask ourselves, for example, what ‘digital transformation’ is all about. What are the core competencies of ‘digital transformation’? What does “leadership in a digital context” look like?
It is clear from the many projects on “digitalization” and “digital transformation” that the core competencies of good managers are, in particular, human and interpersonal skills:
“Emotional competence, intercultural and interpersonal competence, the ability to give and receive help, to ask good questions.” (Edgar Schein, 2018).
Methodologically, the Master’s programme combines personal experience, practical practice and learning on your own case project and links these with the most important inputs from organizational development, corporate culture, dialogue, career and process thinking.
The focus is on the participants’ own change project and they form a “consortium of learning organizations”, as successfully introduced by Peter Senge.
The accompanying learning coaching, which focuses on personal development and resource-oriented self-management, should be emphasized. Group or case coaching (or teaching supervision) deals with situations and questions/case work from everyday working life. All of this is interwoven with theoretical input on your own organization.
We distinguish ourselves very clearly from groups that focus on the “challenges of digitalization”, uphold the myth of automation and computerization, speak of the abolition of hierarchy, agile systems, disruption, holacracy and present this as a solution for today’s organizations. We will also take a critical look at the various management hypes and shed light on the philosophical and social background to our current working world and all the upheavals.
Organizational development is eminently practical, a collection of tools, and we agree with Ed Schein:
“There is no universal leadership style. What managers need to do depends on the specific organizational situation. Change agents should have:
The ability to think like an anthropologist, the intervention skills of a family therapist and the creative instincts of an artist” (Schein 2009, 57).
Basically, this is part of the “art of change”. The aim will be to learn this art and, in the end, to be able to “drop your tools” as a sign of “mastery”, as Karl Weick so aptly puts it. (“Drop your tools”).

TRIAS – Masterclass 2: Live 2023
Individual coaching/learning coaching
Individual coaching/learning coaching is a possible/voluntary component of this Trias Masterclass and completes the case-based teaching supervision.
Like the first part of the teaching supervision, it is carried out by Anne Fanenbruck, Margrit Fischer or Sylvia Böcker.
The resource-oriented individual coaching / learning coaching complements the teaching supervision / case work and enables an individual deepening and repetition of the topics of life and work organization, self-development, in the sense of the development of the inner self: My ego, my self, my potentials and visions; my learning blocks and life issues; work-life balance and burnout prevention. It also serves to analyze and shape roles.
The focus is also on “working on the self as an instrument”. This program is highly relevant both for everyday personal and professional life and we are proud to offer a masterclass that gives these central topics an important place.
In addition to generally applicable topics, it is specifically expanded with content tailored to our Masterclass.
Group/case coaching (teaching supervision)
Group and case coaching (or teaching supervision) is the learning vehicle in which case situations or ongoing change projects are primarily looked at in a group, critically reflected upon, provided with next action steps and later reported back and modified.
Teaching supervision also serves to learn the craft, “the art of change”. Experienced consultants or managers from the Trias staff serve as teaching supervisors.
The teaching supervision sessions serve the development of the profession and the implementation of all the content learned in personal or organizational change projects. These are carried out in groups and also serve the later model of peer or collegial intervision groups. Developing projects and practicing interventions are part of the content, as is meta-reflection for the purpose of peer learning.
